Frequently Asked Questions
Galloping tintypes was a slang word for the movies when motion pictures were just beginning to become popular entertainment.
Silent movies are getting more praise and attention now than they have in decades but most people still believe the cliches and rumors that have been circulating about the art. Silent movies need all the champions they can get.
Much though I would like to, this site is a hobby and, while I will help as much as I can, I may not be able to answer queries of this nature promptly. Be sure to check our links section for websites with more silent movie information.
The majority of the images in my reviews are screen captures from DVDs and digital recordings. The use of these images is protected by the principles of fair use. That is, I am using the screen captures for the purposes of education, review and criticism and not for the purpose of replacing or rivalling original material. In some cases, images were taken from the websites of public domain sellers. I have the express permission of the site owners to use these images.
I have the right to use these screen captures and images of DVD covers but I do not have any authority to give others the right to republish them. If you need permission to use an image from a specific film, I suggest contacting the company that holds the DVD rights. I have linked to an excellent breakdown of fair use for screen captures and clips if you are interested.
The reviews on this site are more focused on the content of the film than the quality of the presentation. Does that mean that we do not care about the DVD's picture and music? Hardly! We simply chose to focus on the overall artistry of the picture itself rather than the DVD release. However, if there is one version of a film that is superior to others, we will certainly recommend it.
You may quote reviews and articles from this website as long as the quotation is properly cited. However, I ask that you do not quote lengthy passages or complete articles or reviews. As a courtesy, please contact me and let me know what you would like to quote.
While most of the reviews are written by site owner Gwen Lorraine, we do accept guest submissions. Please contact us with the title of the film you would like to review or a summary of the article. For security reasons, we will not open attachments until we have accepted the submission. Please submit all information in the body of the email.
We make a small (microscopic, really) referral fee for all items purchased from Amazon through site links, which helps pay the web hosting fees and usually not even enough for that. Links to individual film companies are not sponsored. Our main concern is making it easy for silent film fans to purchase DVDs, downloads and books. We hope the links add to your convenience.
