On this website, we enjoy featuring reviews of sound films in comparison to silent films. These films may be direct remakes, reimaginings, homages or they may simply share a theme. Often, the sound and silent films make enjoyable double features that actually enrich each other. Many of the films are foreign. If anyone is used to reading subtitles, it is a silent film fan!
The Acent (1977)
Soviet war movie that doubles as a clever religious allegory. Have hankies at the ready! Reviewed in comparison to Way Down East.
The Barbarian (1933)
A torrid desert romance between Ramon Novarro's rogue and Myrna Loy's snob. Reviewed in comparison to Valentino's most famous film, The Sheik.
Bliss (2007)
Beautiful Turkish film concerning the very real problem of so-called honor killings. Reviewed in comparison to D.W. Griffith's 1924 melodrama The White Rose.
The Cheat (1931)
The pre-Code remake of DeMille's famous potboiler, starring the legendary Tallulah Bankhead. Reviewed in comparison to the 1915 original.
Daddy Long Legs (1955)
One of the more famous versions of the popular tale of an orphan and her pen pal. This one stars Fred Astaire and Leslie Caron. Dancing ensues. Reviewed in comparison to the 1919 Mary Pickford vehicle of the same name.
The Forty-First (1956)
A Soviet melodrama concerning the doomed love affair between a Czarist officer and a a revolutionary band's lone female sniper. Reviewed in comparison to Cecil B. DeMille's The Volga Boatman.
Fritz Lang's Indian Epic: The Tiger of Bengal & The Indian Tomb (1959)
Later German work from Fritz Lang, an Indian-flavored yarn that involves much action and intrique. Most famous for Debra Paget's costumes. Or lack thereof. Reviewed in comparison to the 1921 German original.
Judex (1963)
Georges Franju's fast and fun homage to Louis Feuillade's
great crime serials. Reviewed in comparison to the original serial.
The Scarlet Empress (1934)
The legendary team of Josef von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich create a bizarre portrait of Catherine the Great. Reviewed in comparison to Valentino's Russian Robin Hood, The Eagle.
The Shanghai Gesture (1941)
Josef von Sternberg's take on a sordid tale of parentage and revenge. Gene Tierney stars as the hapless heroine. Reviewed in comparison to Lon Chaney's West of Zanzibar, an African take on the same plot.
The Thief of Bagdad (1940)
Lively British fantasy with an Arabian Nights flavor. Conrad Veidt and Sabu steal the show. Reviewed in comparison to Douglas Fairbanks's 1924 original.
